Underground River Systems

Not all rivers flow on the surface. Subterranean rivers carve through limestone, creating vast hidden networks. Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula sits above some of the world's longest underground river systems.

Sistema Sac Actun stretches over 370 kilometers through flooded caves — long the record-holder, though it was surpassed in 2023 by the nearby Sistema Ox Bel Ha, now the longest explored underwater cave on Earth. Ancient Maya considered the cenotes (sinkholes providing access) sacred portals to the underworld.

The Amazon may have a deep groundwater counterpart too. Scientists have proposed the Hamza system, a very slow aquifer-like flow thousands of meters beneath the basin. It is sometimes nicknamed an underground river, but it is not a cave river like Sac Actun: the water appears to move through porous rock at tens of meters per year, so the "river" label is shorthand rather than a normal channel.
