LESSON 2 · Rivers That Built Civilizations

River Trade Networks

Rivers were civilization's original highways. The Rhine linked Roman outposts across northern Europe and shaped every major city from Basel to Rotterdam; it is still Europe's busiest waterway. The Mississippi-Missouri system opened the American interior, with riverboats hauling cotton and grain long before railroads. China's Grand Canal, the longest artificial waterway ever built, connected northern wheat regions with southern rice paddies and helped unify the country.
