Watching the Giant

The USGS keeps Yellowstone under constant watch. A web of seismographs logs the one to two thousand tiny earthquakes that rattle the park every year, while GPS stations track ground movement down to the millimeter.

That is how we know the caldera floor sometimes rises for years, then settles back — the system simply breathing. Scientists are confident this network would catch the buildup to a real eruption long before it arrived.
