LESSON 2 · Weather Gone Wild

Tornado Safety Essentials

Know these life-saving basics:

  • Go to the lowest interior room — a basement is ideal, or a bathroom or closet on the lowest floor
  • Stay away from windows — flying glass causes many tornado injuries
  • Avoid sheltering under overpasses — wind speeds up through them, creating a deadly tunnel effect
  • If caught outside, lie flat in a ditch and cover your head

Mobile homes are the single most dangerous place to be. Even a weak EF1 can destroy one completely, so leave for a sturdier building the moment a warning is issued.
