Why the Plains Lead

Geography is what makes the central US so tornado-prone. The flat Great Plains offer no barriers, while the Rockies and Appalachians act like the walls of a funnel that channels colliding air masses. Spring heating adds energy, making April through June the peak season.

The result is sheer volume: the US records roughly 1,200 tornadoes a year, about four times more than second-place Canada.
