How GPS Actually Works

The Global Positioning System relies on roughly 30 satellites broadcasting precise time signals. Your phone receives signals from at least four of them and works out distance based on how long each signal took to arrive.

GPS accuracy for civilians is typically 3 to 5 meters. Military units achieve centimeter precision using ground station corrections. This technology, once a classified military secret, now guides everything from ride-sharing apps to precision farming.
