The Sun in Perspective

The Sun dominates our solar system in every measurable way:

  • It contains 99.86% of the solar system's total mass
  • Its diameter is about 109 times Earth's diameter
  • Roughly 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it by volume
  • It has been burning for 4.6 billion years, with about 5 billion left

Everything else — every planet, moon, and asteroid combined — adds up to less than a fifth of one percent of the whole.
