LESSON 1 · Grand Tour of the Solar System
The Sun in Perspective
The Sun dominates our solar system in every measurable way:
- It contains 99.86% of the solar system's total mass
- Its diameter is about 109 times Earth's diameter
- Roughly 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it by volume
- It has been burning for 4.6 billion years, with about 5 billion left
Everything else — every planet, moon, and asteroid combined — adds up to less than a fifth of one percent of the whole.
