In about 5 billion years, the Sun will swell to roughly **100 times** its current diameter, with its surface reaching out near Earth's orbit. It will engulf Mercury and Venus. Earth may barely escape being swallowed, but by then its oceans will have boiled away and its surface will be a scorched, lifeless rock.
