An 18th-century naming mistake
The name is a leftover error. Through early telescopes, these round, glowing shells looked like the small disks of planets such as Uranus, so astronomer William Herschel called them planetary nebulae. They have nothing to do with planets — they are the cast-off outer layers of a dying star.
