LESSON 4 · The Life and Death of Stars

How Supernovae Shape Us

Supernovae are among the most consequential events in the cosmos:

  • Massive stars fuse elements up to iron, then their cores collapse
  • A single blast can outshine an entire galaxy
  • Most of the energy escapes as neutrinos, not light
  • Elements heavier than iron are forged in the explosion
  • Type Ia blasts act as standard candles for measuring the universe

Without them, the cosmos would hold only hydrogen, helium, and a trace of lithium — no rocky planets, no water, no life. Every complex atom in your body was recycled through at least one stellar explosion.
