LESSON 4 · The Life and Death of Stars

Supernova Remnants Explored

After a supernova, the ejected material expands into space as a supernova remnant, sweeping up interstellar gas and creating a glowing shell visible for tens of thousands of years. The Crab Nebula, Cas A, and the Veil Nebula are among the most studied remnants.

Supernova remnants are where cosmic rays are born. The expanding shockwave accelerates particles to nearly the speed of light, creating the high-energy radiation that permeates the galaxy. These cosmic rays contribute to background radiation on Earth and may have influenced the evolution of life by causing genetic mutations over billions of years.
