LESSON 1 · Galaxies & the Cosmic Web
Andromeda Collision Course
The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are approaching each other at roughly 110 km/s and will collide in about 4.5 billion years. The merger will take around 2 billion years, eventually forming a single large elliptical galaxy sometimes nicknamed "Milkomeda."
Individual star collisions will be extraordinarily rare, since the distances between stars are so vast. Our solar system will likely survive intact, though it may be flung into a new orbit, while Andromeda's stars fill the night sky during the approach.
