LESSON 2 · Galaxies & the Cosmic Web
Galaxy Evolution Path
Galaxies are not static — they evolve dramatically over cosmic time. Young galaxies in the early universe tend to be irregular and chaotic, with intense bursts of star formation. Over billions of years, gravitational interactions and mergers reshape them into the organized spirals and smooth ellipticals we see today. A galaxy keeps forming stars only while fresh gas flows in. When that supply is cut off — through mergers, black-hole feedback, or environmental stripping — star formation stops and the galaxy reddens and fades.
