LESSON 1 · Humanity's Journey to Space

One Giant Leap

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11's lunar module Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility. Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on another world, followed by Buzz Aldrin. Michael Collins orbited above in the command module. The mission lasted 8 days. Armstrong and Aldrin spent just 2 hours and 31 minutes on the surface.

Five more Apollo missions landed on the Moon through 1972, with Apollo 17 being the last. Only 12 humans have ever walked on the lunar surface. The program was canceled due to budget pressures and fading public interest.
