Module by module in orbit, across more than 30 missions over about a decade
Assembly began with the Russian Zarya module on 20 November 1998. Over roughly the next decade, more than 30 launches carried up sections built in the US, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada, which were then joined together in space by shuttle crews and robotic arms.
