LESSON 3 · Is Anybody Out There?

Modern Drake Estimates

Plug in numbers and the answer swings wildly. Optimists who assume life and intelligence appear readily land on millions of civilizations. Pessimists who treat any biological step as a fluke get a galaxy where Earth stands alone.

The split comes almost entirely from the L factor. Generous lifetimes keep many civilizations active at once; short ones mean they flare up and vanish before their signals ever overlap in time. The Drake Equation cannot pick a winner — it just shows which assumption is doing the heavy lifting.
