LESSON 4 · Medieval Life Uncut

Betrayed by Everyone

After crowning Charles VII at Reims Cathedral, Joan's luck collapsed. She was captured by Burgundian forces in 1430 and sold to the English for 10,000 livres — a king's ransom. The girl who saved France became a bargaining chip.

Charles VII — the king she had crowned — did nothing to rescue her. The English tried her for heresy, though the real charge was wearing men's clothing. On May 30, 1431, Joan was burned alive at age 19, asking for a cross to hold as she died.
