LESSON 1 · How America Happened

Hamilton vs. Everyone

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr despised each other for years before their famous duel. Hamilton had blocked Burr's political ambitions repeatedly, calling him dangerous and untrustworthy in both private letters and public speeches that circulated widely.

Hamilton's feud with Aaron Burr ended with Burr shooting him dead in a duel in 1804. Burr was the sitting Vice President at the time. He was charged with murder in two states and finished his term in office anyway. Early American politics was genuinely unhinged.
