LESSON 1 · How America Happened

Flawed Brilliance

None of this erases what the Founders accomplished. They designed a system of government that has survived 250 years of wars, scandals, and crises. The Constitution's framework of checks and balances was revolutionary.

But understanding their flaws matters. These weren't demigods — they were ambitious, contradictory humans who made a deeply imperfect document. The genius of the Constitution isn't that it was perfect. It's that it was designed to be improved by every generation that followed. The Bill of Rights addressed the most urgent fears about individual liberty, and the amendment process has proven remarkably durable ever since.
