One officer floated the idea; Washington shut it down
In a 1782 letter, Colonel Lewis Nicola hinted that the struggling republic might need a monarchy with Washington at its head. It was one man's musing, not a formal offer of a crown. Washington rebuked the idea sharply, writing that nothing had pained him more — and the precedent of refusing power stuck.
