LESSON 3 · How America Happened

A Calculated Strike

The tea belonged to the British East India Company. The men were careful to damage nothing else — they even replaced a broken padlock. This wasn't mindless destruction. It was a calculated act of economic sabotage.

Britain's response — the Coercive Acts of 1774, which closed Boston Harbor and suspended Massachusetts self-government — turned a local tax protest into a continent-wide crisis. What looked like a small-scale property crime became the spark for the Revolutionary War within two years. Symbols sometimes cost more than substance.
