Most survived; many paid a heavy price, but the 'tortured to death' story is a myth
A popular chain email claims signers were executed and tortured to death by the British. None were. Some, like **John Hart** and **Richard Stockton**, lost homes, health, or fortunes during the fighting. Plenty of others lived long lives — **Jefferson**, **Adams**, and **Franklin** all reached old age. The real story is sacrifice, not martyrdom.
