LESSON 2 · Mysteries of the Nile

One King, Two Crowns

Around 3100 BCE, a ruler known as Narmer unified Upper and Lower Egypt into a single kingdom. The famous Narmer Palette depicts him wearing both the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt. This unification was not peaceful, as the palette shows conquered enemies.

The result was the world's first large-scale nation-state, with centralized government, standardized writing, and organized taxation. The Double Crown symbolized this unity for three millennia.
