Literal retaliation kicked in only when victim and offender were both free citizens of the same rank: one law put out the eye of a man who blinded his equal, another knocked out the tooth of a man who knocked out an equal's tooth. Injure someone of lower status, and you simply paid silver — so a person's body was effectively priced by social rank, not by the harm itself.
