LESSON 4 · Dawn of Civilization: Mesopotamia

Nineteen Rebellions

The crisis of 522 BCE reveals the fragility of ancient empires. The Persian Empire was barely a generation old when a succession dispute nearly tore it apart. After killing the alleged impostor, Darius faced nineteen rebellions in a single year across the empire.

He recorded the campaigns himself, carving his account into a cliff at Behistun as official history. The only version that survives is his own — written by the man who had the most to gain from it.
