Why Free Men Volunteered
The stereotype of gladiators as chained slaves is only half true. Many were slaves or prisoners of war, but a substantial minority — and by the end of the Republic perhaps as many as half — were free men who volunteered. Some were landless veterans looking for stable pay and food. Some were debt-ridden and saw the arena as a way out. A few were aristocrats chasing fame and scandal.
Gladiators who survived several years often bought their freedom and retired with small fortunes. The best became celebrities with fan clubs, sponsors, and even groupies.
