LESSON 4 · Rise & Fall of Rome

Arminius's Trap

Arminius knew Roman tactics inside and out. He had served in the Roman army and earned Roman citizenship, even rising to equestrian status.

He used every bit of that knowledge to lead Varus straight into a trap. The emperor Augustus reportedly beat his head against the walls for months afterward, crying "Varus, give me back my legions!" The Rhine became Rome's permanent northern border — not because Rome lacked ambition, but because the disaster convinced later emperors the cost was simply too high.
