The Ghost Casts

In 1863, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli made a breakthrough discovery. He noticed hollow voids in the hardened ash — spaces left by decomposed bodies. He poured liquid plaster into these voids, creating haunting casts of people in their final moments.

The casts are wrenching to see. A mother shielding her child, a man covering his mouth, two people holding hands — each pose preserved exactly as death found it. Over 1,100 bodies have been recovered, and their postures tell us the eruption left almost no time to escape.
