A secret license for young elite Spartans to roam the countryside and kill helot slaves
The krypteia was part graduation test, part state terror. Select trainees were sent out in secret, often by night, to hunt and kill any helots they judged dangerous or simply found alone. It blooded young Spartans and kept the enslaved majority too frightened to rebel.
