Six Assassins, One Street

The Black Hand had placed six killers along the motorcade route. The first to act hurled a grenade. It bounced off the folded roof of the car and blew up under the vehicle behind, wounding officers and bystanders but missing the Archduke entirely.

• Conspirator 1 froze and did nothing
• Conspirator 2 threw the grenade that missed
• Conspirators 3 to 5 failed to act as the car raced by
• Conspirator 6 was Gavrilo Princip, who assumed the plot was dead

The motorcade sped to city hall. The attack looked like a total failure — until the Archduke insisted on visiting the wounded in hospital, and his driver took a wrong turn.
