Stalin ordered the canal finished in record time with almost no machinery, so prisoners cut through rock and frozen ground with primitive tools. Official records list around 12,000 deaths, but many historians believe the real toll was far higher. The finished canal was too shallow for most ships, making the suffering largely pointless.
