LESSON 1 · When Disaster Struck
Magnitude Nine
The earthquake is estimated at magnitude 8.5 to 9.0 — among the most powerful ever to hit Europe. Survivors who fled to the waterfront for open ground watched in horror as the sea pulled back, exposing the harbor floor, before it returned as a tsunami that swept through the lower city.
Then fires broke out across the ruins and burned for five days, destroying almost everything the earthquake and tsunami had left standing.
