LESSON 3 · When Disaster Struck

The Workers Nobody Mentions

The Titanic carried 908 crew members, from the captain to the coal stokers working in 120-degree heat below the waterline:

  • 176 stokers — shoveling coal into furnaces for about £6 per month
  • Stewards and stewardesses — many stayed at their posts, knowing they'd never reach a boat
  • Engineers — all 35 died keeping the lights and pumps running so others could escape
  • The band — eight musicians played to the final moments; none survived

Of the 908 crew, only 212 survived — a rate of just 23%.
