A solid mass of melted nuclear fuel
When the core melted down, fuel, sand, and concrete fused into a lava-like mass called corium that hardened in the basement. Nicknamed the 'Elephant's Foot' for its shape, it was so radioactive that in 1986 just minutes near it could be fatal.
