The Global Reckoning

Fukushima forced the world to reconsider nuclear energy. Germany decided to phase out all nuclear power by 2023. Japan shut down all 54 of its nuclear reactors for review, and only a fraction have restarted since.

Highly radioactive melted fuel still sits inside the damaged reactors, too dangerous for any human to approach. The robots sent in to inspect it keep failing from radiation exposure. Full decommissioning is not expected to finish until 2051.
