They are among the spots where cremated human remains were buried — the excavated bones of roughly 58 people have been recovered from the Aubrey Holes and nearby, with perhaps up to about 150 buried across the site in total.
Strontium analysis of some of the cremated bones suggests several of these people came from western Britain, most likely west Wales — the same region as the bluestones. Stonehenge may have served as a cemetery for an important group long before the famous stones arrived.
