Stonehenge as Technology
In 1965, astronomer Gerald Hawkins published Stonehenge Decoded, arguing the monument was a Neolithic computer that could predict eclipses; Fred Hoyle later refined the idea. The leading Stonehenge archaeologist of the day, Richard Atkinson, demolished it in a 1966 paper pointedly titled Moonshine on Stonehenge. Today most archaeologists agree Stonehenge was a solstice-aligned ritual monument, not a computing or eclipse-prediction machine. (A 2022 proposal that it also encoded a solar calendar drew headlines but was quickly disputed by other researchers.)
What the evidence does support is real and impressive. The sarsen circle held exactly 30 uprights capped by 30 lintels, and on the summer solstice the sun rises just to the left of the Heel Stone, roughly along the central axis. The four Station Stones also line up with the moon's southernmost rising at its major standstill — though whether that lunar alignment was intentional is still actively debated.
The lintels are locked together with tongue-and-groove connections, and each rests on its uprights via mortise-and-tenon joints — a precision borrowed from carpentry but executed in sarsen, a silcrete sandstone nearly as hard as granite. Even stripped of the mysticism, that engineering would have seemed extraordinary to anyone outside the circle.
