Far from united
The old idea of an even split into thirds is a myth, often misattributed to John Adams. Modern historians estimate that about 40 to 45 percent of free colonists backed the Patriots, only 15 to 20 percent stayed loyal to Britain, and the rest tried to stay neutral. Independence was driven by a committed minority, not a united public.
