A foreign-officered army
Late in the war, the Qing relied on the Ever-Victorious Army, a force of Chinese soldiers led by Western officers. The American Frederick Townsend Ward built it, and the British officer Charles Gordon later commanded it during the campaigns that retook Taiping cities.
