LESSON 3 · Icons Who Shaped History

The Assassination's Aftermath

Lincoln's assassination on April 14, 1865 — just five days after Lee's surrender — was catastrophic for the nation he had fought to preserve. His successor, Andrew Johnson, was a Southern Democrat with little interest in protecting the rights of freed people.

Lincoln's legacy stays contested because his story resists simple narratives. He was not the flawless moral hero of legend, nor the reluctant latecomer his critics sometimes describe. He moved with the war, not ahead of it — and that pragmatism is exactly what let him deliver lasting change rather than a doomed gesture.
