LESSON 3 · Marvels of the Ancient World

Not Just Gladiators

Gladiator fights get all the attention, but the Colosseum hosted a full program. Mornings featured animal hunts (venationes), where exotic beasts from across the empire were killed. Midday brought public executions — criminals fed to animals or forced to reenact fatal myths. The afternoon drew the biggest crowds for gladiatorial combat.

The afternoon headliner was gladiatorial combat, but most fights were not to the death. Trained gladiators were expensive investments, and historians estimate that a clear majority of professional bouts ended without a fatality. The real mass killing fell on condemned prisoners and animals, not the star fighters.
