The echo comes back resembling the call of a quetzal bird
The staircase's stepped geometry turns a handclap into a chirping echo that resembles the call of the sacred quetzal bird. Acoustic engineer David Lubman suggested in 1998 that the Maya designed this on purpose, but later acousticians showed the echo's character depends on the sound that triggers it, so whether it was deliberate remains debated.
