Under the Qin Dynasty, the labor force was made up of conscripted peasants, prisoners, and soldiers who toiled in harsh, remote conditions. The true death toll is unknown, but it was high enough to leave a lasting mark on Chinese memory — the wall became a symbol of suffering as much as strength.

A famous legend even calls it "the longest cemetery on Earth," claiming workers were buried where they fell. No human remains have ever been found inside the wall, so the story is best understood as folklore rather than fact.

Emperor Qin Shi Huang's obsession with the wall contributed to his dynasty's collapse. The massive labor demands and crushing taxation sparked revolts that destroyed the Qin Dynasty just 15 years after it unified China.
