LESSON 1 · Engineering Feats

The Real Secret: Medicine

When the US took over in 1904, the hero was not the chief engineer. The breakthrough came from Dr. William Gorgas, who knew that mosquitoes carried the yellow fever and malaria that had devastated the French.

  • Drained swamps and standing water across the Canal Zone
  • Screened windows, fumigated buildings, and oiled every puddle
  • Eliminated yellow fever from Panama by 1906
  • Cut malaria cases sharply within a few years

Without Gorgas, the Americans would have failed exactly like the French. Engineering mattered, but public health saved the canal.
