Cathedrals and Gallows
Medieval Europe spent centuries building cathedrals that still stand as marvels. Notre-Dame took 182 years to complete. Whole communities poured their wealth into structures built to inspire awe and devotion. The same communities held public executions as entertainment on the church steps.
The Church that commissioned Chartres Cathedral, preserved classical texts in monasteries, and cared for the sick also burned heretics, launched deadly Crusades, and persecuted Jews. Both things were real at the same time, in the same institutions.
