The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), not The Wealth of Nations (1776)
Most people link 'invisible hand' to The Wealth of Nations (1776), but Smith first put the phrase in print seventeen years earlier, in The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). The 1776 use is the famous market-economics one, where he argued that people pursuing their own self-interest can end up benefiting society โ a baker bakes bread for profit, yet everyone still gets fed.
