LESSON 6 · How the Economy Actually Works
Recovery Shapes
Economists describe recoveries using letter shapes. A V-shape means a sharp decline followed by an equally sharp rebound — what happened after COVID lockdowns lifted. A U-shape involves a long bottom before gradual improvement.
The dreaded L-shape means the economy drops and stays flat, as Japan experienced in the 1990s. A K-shape splits the economy: some sectors boom while others languish, which is how the post-pandemic recovery played out as tech workers thrived and service workers struggled.
The shape depends on how fast policymakers respond and whether lasting damage occurred. Quick, decisive action tends to produce V-shapes; delayed responses drag the pain out.
