LESSON 2 · The Future of Work & Money

Finding the Balance

The gig economy is not inherently good or bad — it is a structural shift that calls for updating social institutions built for a different era. The goal is to keep real flexibility while guaranteeing basic protections.

The most promising idea is portable benefits, tied to workers rather than to a single employer. Pro-rated benefits based on hours worked could bridge the gap between full employment and raw gig work.

The worst outcome is accepting a permanent underclass of unprotected workers as the price of convenience. The best one keeps platform innovation alive while ensuring the people powering these platforms share in the value they create.
