Political Reality

UBI faces enormous political obstacles despite growing intellectual support. The left worries it could replace existing welfare programs with inadequate cash. The right objects to massive tax increases.

The most promising path may be incremental expansion of programs already in place. Child allowances, earned income credits, and negative income taxes already work like partial basic incomes. Growing them gradually could deliver UBI-like results without the political shock of an overnight overhaul.
