LESSON 1 · Ecosystems: How Nature Balances

A Web of Life

This density extends to every group: insects, birds, amphibians, and fungi form an interconnected web of staggering complexity. Much of it is layered vertically, from the dark forest floor up through the understory to a sunlit canopy that holds its own communities of life.

Many species remain undiscovered. Entomologists regularly find new insects on individual canopy trees that have never been named.

This biodiversity is not decorative — it is functional infrastructure. Each species plays roles in pollination, decomposition, pest control, and nutrient cycling that keep the forest operating.
